"They might not have taken your book, though," Mathea says, trying to encourage the stranger. He looks blank. "You came here to look at a book, didn't you?"
"Yes. I see your point. I will ask at the Seminary." He doesn't sound hopeful. Mathea opens the door and looks out, but the coast is clear.
"You should be safe now," she says with a grin, "your admirers are gone."
She calls "good luck!" as he leaves, his little creature trotting by his side.
