Arvid leads the little group up the hill and away from the beach for about half a mile, until they reach a cave set into the hill. He goes inside without hesitation, leaving the barrel beside the entrance, and pulls out two battered chests from the far back corners.
"You've been here before, haven't you?" Mathea asks.
"It's a convenient hiding place." He bends over the first chest and raises the lid.
"What were you hiding from?"
"Whichever clan we last annoyed. Depends on who we were working for." He hands a blanket to Ylva, who is staring around at the cave with delight.
"Was it always raiding work?" Mathea persists.
"No, usually cargo hauling. But raiding pays better." He holds out a blanket to her, and she takes it. "There's always someone who wants a bit of their neighbour's good fortune. Someone who remembers an old family feud. You know what they're like." He sits down at the back of the cave, wrapping his own blanket around him. "Get some sleep. It's nearly morning."
