"Mum?"
Mathea spins at the welcome sound of her daughter's voice. Ylva is looking shamefaced and her hands are clasped together tightly.
"Ylva!" She turns to hug her in relief.
"I'm - I'm so..." Ylva's saying something, but it doesn't matter right now.
"It's all right," Mathea says, sure of that. "Everything's all right now."
After a few moments, Ylva stiffens and looks up, over Mathea's shoulder, at the sea.
"Oh, look," she says, her voice bright with hope. "A ship!"
"Really?" Mathea turns to look too. It seems appropriate that the Raven Cloud should return now. But as she squints at the horizon, an unwelcome second sail comes into view.
"What's wrong?" Ylva asks.
"There's more than one."
