The head of the Bakers' Guild is younger than Ffion had expected. She sits at a long dark desk with a large window behind her, although the tall back of the chair means the area right in front of her is still shadowed. Inric hangs back as Ffion approaches.
"You wanted to see me?"
"Yes. About Ellis Rhisiart. My brother."
"Ellis broke the Guild laws." Her voice is even, with just a little curiosity.
"I know."
"His employers have disclaimed responsibility."
"I know." Ffion takes a breath. "And I know you are going to register a case at the city court."
"So what did you want to say to me?"
This was it. Ffion doesn't hesitate. "I want you to take him on as an apprentice here."
The head of the Bakers' Guild puts down her papers and gives Ffion a long, thoughtful look.
"Setting aside the legal case," she says eventually, "apprenticeship is expensive."
"So are the law courts," Ffion says, amazed that she can still speak without stuttering. "And so is the Rhisiart compact. Ellis is a good baker. If you take him on, I can cancel the compact."
