Inric arrives late, but Colle has been waiting for him. He looks tired, leaning more on his stick than he usually does. Copper bounces along as though he could go on all night.
"Another day of walking?" she asks.
"Yes."
"Can't you just go straight to where the book is? By magic?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"I don't know where it is."
"Oh." A thought comes to her, a memory of the stranger saying 'free-style transfer is exhausting.' "So is it difficult, doing the magic?"
"No, providing the place is known." He looks sideways at her. "Why do you ask?"
"Oh, no reason." She feels smug, which is ridiculous, but it pleases her.
