Mina stops as they come to the crest of the hill, and a long wide valley opens out before them, a river running through it. On one side is a high bluff with trees around its base, but on the other side, the slope rises in regular steps.
"Oh, it's so pretty!" she says.
"Why does nobody live here?" Colle asks, her sharp eyes marking the overgrown terraces.
"The lands near the Great Library are held in common," Inric says. "No clan may seek to gain prestige by establishing holdings here." He starts off down the slope.
"And before the Great Library?"
"There are few good records."
"Fertile ground and natural caverns make for good habitation," Colle persists. "And it looks like people lived here once."
Mina, reaching the caves, grins in delight at what she can see inside them. "Bookwyrms live here now!"
