"Jory! What happened?" Kelyn steps over the low ridge of rocks below the eagle's beak to where he's lying, unmoving. Then she looks up to the odd person standing at Jory's head. He must be an uplander, he's too tall to be anything else, but his hair is long and fully black, and his skin much darker than any uplander she has seen. She eyes him suspiciously. "Who are you? Did you do this?!"
"I did not."
He doesn't look like he has just been beating Jory - who is much younger and probably stronger. Kelyn drops to her knees and shakes Jory gently.
"Jory?" Then she notices the open bag by his side. "Oh no, the books!"
"Books?" the stranger says, suddenly interested.
