"What's it about?"
"It is about the constraints governing magic use in cultures at very early stages of development."
Kelyn only really hears one word in the explanation, but it's all she needs. "It's about magic? Are you a patterner?"
"What is a patterner?"
"A magic user. A Broghan magic user," she says, and looks at him again. "But you're not Broghan, are you?"
"I am not."
"But you're interested in magic?"
"Yes. The magic of the patterners. And the magic of your people."
"Oh, we don't have any magic," she says, glaring ahead and thankful again for the dark glasses.
