"Is this your book?" Kelyn asks, getting to her feet to hand the book which had been stuffed into Jory's shirt up to Inric. "I found it with those other two. I think they're the ones Jory brought for me."
Inric's whole face brightens at the sight of the book, his exhaustion fading. "I thought - I had thought it lost," he says. "Thank you."
"I should be saying that." Kelyn swallows. Inric stops gazing at the book and turns his attention back to her. "Did you know Jory was a patterner?" she asks.
"I suspected that he was, yes."
"His patterns are for fire. I didn't know they would make so much fire." She tries hard to stop her voice shaking at the memory of the flames and that it was all her own stupid fault. "Thank you for rescuing us."
"No obligation remains," he says solemnly, as though it is a legal declaration, but for the first time since she met him, he is smiling.
