Davo returns to find the odd stranger gone, and for a moment he panics. Did he pay the bill? But the barmaid is smiling at him.
"Your pilgrim friend has gone," she says.
"Oh..." Davo isn't quite sure what to say.
"Some boy came in in quite a panic and hauled him off."
"Ah. So..."
"He left money, before you panic," she says, and Davo relaxes. "You have another few ales on his coin yet."
"How many?"
"Honestly, I don't know. I've never seen a coin like this." She produces the large metal disc and Davo has to agree with her that it is very unusual. "But I reckon you're good for the rest of the day at any rate. So - another pint?"
"Well, of course," Davo says. "I should toast my good friend Inaric. And drink to his success, whatever he's up to now."
