I've just finished reading a book. It was a fairly decent book, it told a good story, the characters were not too stereotypical and so on. It was new, and to buy a book new that I have not read (or the prequel/sequel to which I have not read) is very unusual for me, especially when I don't even know the author. But I thought I'd take a chance on it, and it was, on the whole, worth it (which is a relief, since I spent precious book vouchers on it. Book vouchers are a wonderful invention; I love going into a bookshop with vouchers because I can't spend them on anything except books, so I don't need to feel guilty about getting books instead of, say, food, or soap, or any other trivial necessity of life). Anyway, the book was good.
Except for one thing. Why, oh why, did everything have a surplus apostrophe in? There were wit'ches, for example, not witches. El'vin. Og'res. Even rock'goblins (and if that isn't superfluous, what is?) Most of the character names bore apostrophes forcibly inserted at random. After a while I think I got used to it, but it was rather odd, to say the least. It's a good thing that random apostrophes in a book aren't a sign of bad readability the way they frequently are in, say, Usenet posts. Or should that be post's?
