Random things we did recently: Bought a cheap clock at Argos the other week, with the intention of taking it apart to look at its gears. When we finally extracted it from the casing, we found out they were plastic, but never mind. The mechanism is very cool, although for some reason it won't work any more - we put it all back as it should be, just outside the casing, but now it won't tick. It's very vexing, since a visible working clock mechanism would be a rather cool thing to have around, even if it does have plastic gears. It served its purpose, though, and now it's sitting sadly on top of my table waiting for one of us to do something with it. I've already drawn on the back of the guarantee, which has been quite soundly voided ^.^
