Mina is sitting peeling potatoes with her mother when her dad comes home.
"Look who's here," he announces, and both turn to the door to see -
"Jakin!"
He's looking grubby and somewhat sheepish and very glad to be home. Mina's mother hurries over to him.
"They kept you so long," she says, "whatever did they want you for? Did they feed you properly?"
"Yes, I don't know, yes... I think that's the right order!" Jakin can't stop grinning. His mother waves him towards the stairs.
"You need a wash," she says. "Go on."
And Mina watches him head up to the washroom, and remembers her parents talking about book thieves.
