Kelyn is roused from her grumpy reverie by the creak of the wagon door opening. Two pairs of bright eyes gleam in the dull interior light.
"What?!" she snaps, and they disappear. Pulling on her dark glasses, she goes to the door and sees two uplander children running off giggling. A woman is facing the wagon with another child next to her. He is also gazing at the wagon with fascination.
"Oh, hello," the woman says. "Esel said Jory had a friend with him. I'm Ludy, by the way. This is Matthi."
"Kelyn."
"Is he dead?" Matthi interjects.
"No!" Kelyn snaps.
"Matthi!"
"Hello, Kelyn," says Brioc, who had traded her lanterns the day before. He smiles. "I heard you were keeping an eye on Jory. Let me know if you need anything."
"Thanks."
