"What do you think you're doing?"
"I want to go with you," Nikhil says, fists clenched.
"Why?"
"I want to help!" He scowls.
"And you want to see the wizards' ruins?" Hian can't help smiling. Nikhil flushes with anger and embarrassment, looking aside. "There's nothing to see but stones, Nikhil," she goes on. "No bones, no ghosts, no glimmers. Go home."
"But -"
"You too, Ulin!"
From a little way away, a bush shakes with the shock of the girl hiding behind it.
"BUT -" Nikhil tries again.
"Before Shrey gets worried about you."
Scowling, the two children leave, already arguing over whose fault it is that they were found. Hian carries on, no longer needing to hide her amusement.
