"It was a failure. They caught him, and me. Lots of us." Arvid looks away, face twisting in memory. "Us, they held for ransom. The others were killed. My brother paid for our freedom with everything we owned. But it took months to arrange. When I got back, they told me Eidys had died, and you had gone with the baby. Our daughter."
