Thoughts on Remembrance Sunday, 1998

I visited a World War cemetery today, for Remembrance Sunday. There is no experience like looking out across a green field, covered with crosses, stretching off into the distance almost as far as the eye can see. I was hit once again by the huge tragedy of war, and I found myself moved to pray "Lord, never let this happen again!"

But then a thought came powerfully into my mind. Worse than this will happen again. Vastly more than this number of souls will be lost, on the day when Jesus returns...

The World Wars were an indescribable tragedy, but every one of the men and women killed during the Wars would have died anyway.  Everyone will die physically - but we know that's not what counts. Those who've trusted Jesus Christ as Saviour will live forever... those who don't will truly die, when the Day comes.

If you can change the eternal destination of just one person on this world... hasn't that got to be worth putting your life into?

If friends or relatives get a terminal disease, prayer is redoubled around them. This happened recently in my life where a friend's relative was dying, and God answered prayer: he came to Christ shortly before he died. We had time to pray there - but I wouldn't have prayed for him had he not been near death.

Our non-Christian friends could leave us at any time. And we won't necessarily get as much warning as I did in this case...

Our command from Jesus Himself is to make disciples. This is urgent. Untold thousands are dying across the world every day, most of whom do not know Christ's redemption.

We all have a part we can play. Everyone knows some non-Christians, and can share their faith in Christ. Do it with gentleness, respect and sensitivity, but never forget the urgency - the unknown time limit for each individual friend.

And we can all pray. Share Christ with those who we're able to; pray for Christians who will share Him with those who we're not able to.

How are you spending your life? Are you investing too much time in things that will pass away with this world? Or are you storing up treasures in heaven - playing some part in bringing in the great harvest of seeking souls?    Because we don't have long...

Become blameless and pure, children of God in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word that gives life   - Philippians 2:15-16

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect   - 1 Peter 3:15

God gave us the work of telling everyone about the peace we can have with him  - 2 Corinthians 5:18

Jesus said: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.  - Matthew 28:19-20
